Barbara Loftus is a British artist whose family originated in Germany. Her mother grew up in Schöneberg, Berlin and fled to England in 1939 to escape the National Socialists. It took many years for her to be able to talk to her daughter about her family in Germany. The exhibition “A Door in the Past – Paintings for my Mother”, held at The Jugend Museum, Berlin, in 2013 displayed pictures, drawings and footage that Barbara Loftus put together according to her mother’s memories. Accompanied by documents from the 1920’s and 1930’s, they opened a door into her German past.

The fascinating link between private memory and history in Barbara Loftus’ work inspired the Jugend Museum to put on an art exhibition for the first time. It was also the first time that Barbara’s work could be seen in her mother’s native city.
